Max Greenfield and Jake Johnson, better known as Nick and Schmidt from FOX’s New Girl, stopped by On Air with Ryan Seacrest to talk about their hit show and if their own personal experiences — like losing their virginities — were as awkward as life is for their characters.
The onscreen dup revealed they’re friends off-screen as well, and that they became close after they tried out for the show on the same day.
“We actually auditioned on the same day,” says Jake. “He was always the Schmidt and I, the Nick. I dont think we can do the other one … it’d be so gross if I took off my shirt.”
Max added: “The audition process in general, you’re so vulnerable at that stage … you try to find a friend during that and we found each other and it ended up being such a long thing … that we kind of ended up hanging out the whole time … We were being cool bros and didn’t realize what idiots we were.”
The funny guys also shared that when they first started filming, they looked so much alike that they assumed one of them would be cut from the cast. “We used to text each other and say, ‘Hey man, what are you wearing today? I don’t want to look too much like you’… because we always thought someone would get fired.”
Since both making the cut, they’ve bonded even more … Max and Jake joked about their onscreen kisses. “Jake was against it at first and I said, ‘Just go with it. Let it happen. Let it be free in the moment,” Max laughed.
“We do a lot of improv in the show and I’ll just go in and kiss him and they say, ‘Please stop. That’s inappropriate.’ and I’d say I think that works and … then they finally put it into the show.”
Jake adds: “All jokes aside, my character’s … kissed a lot of attractive lades in the show but … I’ve been kissed the most by Max in two seasons than any other girls.”
And it’s not just Max and Jake who have become buds, Jake adds the whole cast are good friends.
“We joke around a lot,” he says. “We really do have a great cast. Everybody gets along, which we are lucky about because I’ve heard some other horror stories … we do tons of bits and a lot of that stuff when we joke around makes it onto TV.”
And of course, they do have a “douchebag jar “on set, but the guys shared another award they more-than-sparingly hand out: the Dumbest Boy in the World Award.
“We have the dumbest boy in the world award and whoever says something … that’s just the dumbest crew members or someone on the cast will go you are in fact the dumbest!”
As for those awkward moments which translate into real life on the show, like when Schmidt bought Nick a cookie, the boys shared their opinions for the situation going down in real life.
“I think there are two sides to that,” explains Jake. “I think half [of] guys think there is nothing wrong with that … you can buy your buddy a cookie and then there’s another kind of man that says absolutelyt not!”
But Max on the other hand, “totally disagrees.” “What if you were stopping by your friends house for brunch … let’s say you go to see the football game and in L.A. that starts at 10 o’clock…you’re not going to bring a breakfast item and you’re not going to bring lunch, so maybe I’ll just stop by and get some pastries.”
On another note, as for Max’s involvement with the upcoming Veronica Mars movie, he shares: ”I don’t know a lot. I haven’t seen the script. I know I’m going down for a day or two and I think my scenes are with Kristen [Bell] but that’s about as much as I know.”
